do not fly with a sinus infection
Your snot mutates into something you’ve never seen before and it fills your head until you feel like you face is going to explode. Then you get stuck in SF and you’re afraid to fly back to LA.

i've been sick for more than three weeks.
Yes, I’m using my blog to kvetch about being sick for over three weeks. I’ve gone through an entire box of Sudafed, 10 days of amoxicillin, 4 Mucinex pills (which didn’t work at all), 10 puffs on an inhaler I don’t know how to use, and just started a round of Levaquin which hurts my stomach. I even went to Whole Foods and spent over $20 on a netipot and I HATE sticking...

drunk on butterbeer
My friend Joanna and I ponder what the food in the Harry Potter books would be like in real life:
Butterbeer: melted Worther’s Original butterscotch toffees
Cauldron Cakes: frosted bundt cakes soaked in rum
Chocolate Frogs: Nestle chocolate bars shaped like frogs
Pumpkin Juice: liquid pumpkin pie filling
Ice Mice: a Popsicle shaped like a mouse
Nosebleed Nougat: nougat with green...

biking in LA
I was an avid bike commuter when I lived in Cambridge, but decided to leave my bike In NJ when I moved out to LA. Admittedly, I bought into all the LA stereotypes and rumors including the city being extremely bike unfriendly and increased mortality rates for bikers. However, one of my classmates convinced me that biking to school is perfectly fine and preferred to driving. I was skeptical until...
getting back into the habit...
I think I’ve written at least 4 posts claiming that I’ll put more effort into blogging, but it never really works out so I’m not going to make any promises.

cookie
I bought the most amazing cookie today. It’s an everything cookie which contains coconut, macadamia nuts, and chocolate chips. It’s so amazing, gooey, and oily. Unfortunately, I’m too stressed out to eat the damn thing. I’m breaking my own heart!

the bestest purchase of 2009
I just bought buymylifestory.com. BOOYAH!
Why school makes me sad.
William Safire died a few days ago and I didn’t find out till today. I was an avid reader of On Language. I shouldn’t be mad at school, but I am.

in LA
I’ve officially moved to LA. I still can’t believe I live here because it feels like a really long vacation. In an effort to integrate myself into the LA culture, I’ve taken a number of steps to get myself well situated in my new life.
I bought a car. I was really bummed about this because the responsibility of having a car is overwhelming, but I get kind of excited when I...

Malacca
Malacca is about 2 hours from KL and I would write more about it, but I’m so far behind in my blogging that I’ll leave you with the link to the Wikipedia entry if you wish to learn more: Malacca. Sonny and I drove there with his friend so we could check out some antiques stores and eat chicken rice balls (two things Malacca is known for). The antiques were not that great, but the...
the most EPIC meal ever.
This particular meal was so EPIC it deserves its own post. Since arriving in KL, my family has made it a point to feed me endless amounts of food while wagging a finger at me saying, “You must try everything, girl!”. I’m not easily overcome by large quantities of food, but I’m on the verge of being broken. Anyway, Sonny took me (along with friends and family) to eat...
This is the picture post.
Even though this is the first time I’ve been back to Malaysia in over a decade, everything is still so familiar and some of the people still remember me (!). My Auntie Suzanne still uses the same taxi driver to come pick us up from the family house. His taxi still has the same wonderful scent of worn, but clean seat cushions, car air fresheners, and a little humidity mixed with air...
I'll have pictures soon.
The only reason I haven’t posted any pictures is because I’ve been lazy about taking my camera around with me. Sonny is going to take me on an intermediate level walk in a few minutes so I’ll post something longer later.
Day 1: Sonny and Lianna have major jetlag.
I woke up at 7am to walk around the neighborhood with Sonny. My dad is a champion walker, and I’m an expert stroller so while my dad charged around with excellent enthusiasm for such an early hour (partly due to jetlag), I took my time to take in the sights, particularly the large mansions which are a perfect example of the country’s misguided understanding of luxury.
Wealth and...
The trip took 20 hours.
I’m not big on super luxurious experiences since they tend to make me feel uncomfortable rather than pampered. However, flying business class on Cathay Pacific for a 15 hour flight is life changing especially for someone who hates flying. It’s kind of like the iPhone. Once you’ve experienced it, it’s hard to go back. The sad reality is that I’m in no position to...

loafing is the best way to celebrate
I submitted the book last week and now it’s time to become a waste of space. Here’s what I’ve done since book submission:
Bought a Wii
Planned my vacation to Pittsburgh and Tahoe
Took my first and last Vinyasa Yoga class (I prefer the sit still and fall asleep yoga)
Walked around Harvard Square
Purchased some plaid, flannel shirts
Cooked dinner for myself (!!!)
Played 6...
It's Just Garbage →
This is great article about dumpster diver Darren Atkinson by Cory Doctorow. It reminded me of my dumpster divings days during my senior year of high school. My senior project was about turning trash into fashion. I kept dumpster diving even after my senior project was finished, but decided to stop when I didn’t want to deal with the scarier aspects of this activity (i.e. sharp objects,...
hot date with nyquil + vitamin c
I’m about to embark on what I assume will be one of the best nights of the past two weeks: one entire night of uninterrupted, blissful sleep with nyquil + vitamin c as my companion. What makes this journey so much more exciting is that this new and improved nyquil is smaller thus easier to swallow and has a slight sparkly, green sheen that gives it a magical appearance. They kind of remind...
